What is an elopement?
This kind of wedding is very intimate. It only involves a handful of people (or nobody at all apart from the couple). It’s a beautiful, elegant, adventurous wedding. Sometimes there’s a relaxed ceremony with a celebrant and sometimes it’s just the couple sharing their vows with one another. The main goal is to allow the couple to be able to be themselves, without having to worry what family members or society dictates a wedding day should look like.

Legal Requirements to Marry in Switzerland – Overview
As a destination wedding videographer, most of my clients are not from Switzerland – they have come here for their destination wedding in Switzerland. In almost all cases, whether it’s an elopement or a wedding couples usually get legally married before they come or when they get home. Switzerland is the destination where they celebrate their wedding, have a blessing or share their vows with one another, in the case of an elopement.
However, if you’re looking to actually get legally married here then there are a few things you need to know. This is covered in more detail further down the guide.
If you want to really enjoy the freedom of the elopement then I recommend getting legally married in the country you live in and doing a symbolic ceremony here.
Planning Your Journey: How to Get to Switzerland for Your Elopement
You have a few options when it comes to getting to Switzerland for your elopement adventure! Travelling by plane is easy from any part of the world.
- Vignette Requirement: To use Swiss motorways, you’ll need to purchase a Swiss motorway vignette, which costs CHF 40 and is valid for the calendar year. It can be bought at border crossings, petrol stations, and online.
- Mountain Passes & Weather Considerations: If you’re travelling in winter, be aware that some alpine passes may be closed due to snow. Always check road conditions in advance and ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tyres and snow chains where required.
- Driving in Cities: While driving in Switzerland is straightforward, many cities have limited car access, and parking can be expensive. Consider using the efficient Swiss public transport system once you arrive.

What is the best time of year to get married in Switzerland?
In order to help you decide when to Elope in Switzerland, let’s have a look at the different seasons and what they have to offer.
WINTER
Switzerland is most famous for the epic mountains and the snowy landscapes are magical for elopements … but you’ll need to like the cold and be prepared for that. If you are the adventurous type you can get transported onto a glacier by helicopter and if you’re into skiing, snowboarding or even sledding then you can incorporate these fun activities into your elopement. You can combine the outdoors by finishing your day in the Jacuzzi or a cosy traditional chalet with fondue! If you want to guarantee snow then I recommend you have your elopement in January or February. In order to avoid the skiers and crowds then I also recommend you use a local photographer and videographer to the area so they can whisk you away from it all.

SPRING
Spring overlaps Winter these days and in the lowest altitudes the snow is melting during this time. But higher up in the mountain access is limited to many areas because the ski lifts are starting to close down and hiking isn’t possible due to there still being snow. Late March and April can be problematic in the mountains and there could also be a lot of rain. Combine that with melting snow and it can look grubby …
So if you’re thinking about Spring I would highly recommend either choosing a city location or a hidden gem in the valley somewhere and if you want to be in nature then try May, when the gondolas and cable cars have reopened, the weather is warmer but the summer tourists are in smaller numbers.
SUMMER
Summer stretches from late May right through to the end of September, including Indian Summers and is a very popular tourist season in Switzerland, especially during the holiday break of July and August.
In early June the weather can be very enjoyable and the meadows and Alps in full bloom.
When it comes to the weather, you can expect it to be hot with inland temperatures sometimes between 30 – 35 degrees. It’s a little cooler in mountain villages but it’s typical to have storms in the afternoons. Here in Wengen, where I live, I would say the summer months are much busier now than the winter months when it comes to the amount of people visiting Switzerland and as a result, it will be harder to find a secluded place to exchange your vows. That’s where using a local supplier will benefit you greatly. Don’t forget, with the help of a helicopter you can cool right down and get onto the glacier with a guide.
AUTUMN / FALL
I love Autumn – it’s magical. There are far fewer people around than in summer and the colours of nature are glowing orange and golden. The later you leave it the more chance there will be snow and the temperature will drop significantly. But in September you can still experience warm days and lots of sunshine.

ALL YEAR ROUND
Be prepared for the contrast in temperatures and follow the lead of your photographer and videographers the weather and the best day to elope. Being flexible around your day to Elope is essential because it can be raining one day and beautiful warm sunshine the next. Towards the end of the Autumn in late October it becomes ‘the shoulder’ season in the mountain regions so this means access up the mountain is limited again because the lifts close and some train access becomes limited.
If you’re looking at November to Elope in the mountain regions then you might have snowfall, which can be beautiful but because of the limited transportation, getting amongst it can be difficult. It’s dependent on what Canton you are getting married in so I advise you to reach out sooner rather than later.
